History
Legend as it a women created it in southern China. She was a nun of the Shaolin Temple. Her name was Ng Mui. Yim Wing-chun was her student that made it popular. Some people believe it comes from European boxing, because it shares many similarities.
Lineages
There are several different types of Wing Chun. I will write about a few.
Ip Man: This style was created by Bruce Lee teacher. It promotes offense/defense @ the same time, powerful short range attacks and conserving energy.
Yuen Kay-shun: It has 12 principles and motions.
Gu Lao- It has 40 techniques and it was created by a doctor.
Pan Nam- Its quick, aggressive and powerful.
Techniques
I will list a few.
Lap Sau: Its a grab and press.
Bong Sau: Its deflects punches and can give you wrist control.
Pak Sau: Its a slap block.
Weapons
Here is a list of weapons: butterfly swords, dragon pole and long pole. The butterfly swords are used 4 offense and defense @ the same time. Both of the poles can be used 4 training and fighting. The dragon pole is 7 feet and the long pole is 9 feet.
Effectiveness
Wing Chun is one of the best martial arts when it comes to self-defense. It is eazy to understand and apply in a real fight. It is conceptual, so you can apply many different techniques. It is not as flashy as other forms of Kung-Fu.
Conclusion
It has been around 4 centuries. It has many linages and techniques. It doesn't have that many weapons, but the ones it do have are pretty cool. It may be the greatest martial art for self-defense you could ever learn!!!!
